If you have ever used ChatGPT, you know how you used to visit that website. You either have pinned it in your favorites or you start writing chat.openai.com in the address bar.

But that’s not the most optimum way to get there anymore, fortunately.

ChatGPT’s parent company OpenAI has bought a premium domain AI.com for $11 million. So now when you type AI.com in the address bar, you’ll be redirected to ChatGPT’s website. How cool is that?!

What you must be wondering is that is this big amount, $11 mn justified for just a domain name.

Well, well, well, we need a perspective here. To know how much is too much in this case, I Googled the most expensive domain name sales.

And this is going to blow your mind. So here are the top 5 most expensive domain names:

  1. Voice.com — $30 million
  2. 360.com — $17 million
  3. NFTs.com — $15 million
  4. Sex.com — $13 million
  5. Fund.com — $12 million

This effectively makes this AI.com domain purchase the 7th most expensive domain name deal — at par with Tesla.com.

Is it all worth it?

If you ask me, yes, this big amount is totally worth it. OpenAI is on a grand mission to bring about the next revolution in technology. So they need that domain name that puts worth their big goals.

This is no different from Facebook rebranding the whole company to Meta and moving the desired Metaverse-related products and services to that website.

These big giants and focused startups are betting big on the future. They want to shape how we use technology. Be it metaverse, chatbots and generative AI, or deep fakes, we are witnessing a mind-boggling leap in technological advancements already.

Let’s see what the future has in store for us. Meanwhile, visit AI.com and try ChatGPT if you haven’t already.
